As early as 1965, the need for a new building became apparant but despite enquiries, no sutable plot of land in the locality was available at the time. Constant repairs to the old chapel were essential to prevent futher deterioration. Space too was at a premium, so much so that in 1973, a prefabricated building was errected at the back of the chapel. Affectionately known as 'Shiloh' it was used for young peoples work, and as a creche for many years. It was not until 1983 that a plot of land on a new housing estate came to our attention. Enquiries were made to the builder, and a price of £20,000 was agreed. It was undoubtebly an answer to prayer. Following meetings with the church and elders, a decision was made to proceed with the purchase. Within a year miraculously the money bacame available, and the land was acquired. Every effort was made to increase the building fund, and in 1988 work began on the new building. Deva church opened with its service of dedication on the 10th December 1989. Deva Evangelical Church is an independent fellowship. There is no central office or organisation's headquaters and all decisions are made by elders in conjunction with church members. We are sometimes known as 'Open Brethren' or 'Christian Brethren.' There are many similar fellowships throughout the world meeting in the same way as we do at Deva. We hold to the historic Christian Faith and a deep love for the word of God. We seek to activly preach the gospel, teach the scriptures and be involved in missionary work throughout the world. We practice a simplicity of worship which includes Believer's Baptism and observe weekly the 'Breaking of Bread.'
