The Ladies' Prayer Meeting
It was possibly in 1970 that the late Mrs Stanley, an active member at the old, Gronant Road, Deva Chapel felt the desire to bring the ladies together for prayer on a regular basis. So began the Monthly Sisters’ Prayer Meeting. We used to meet in the small vestry in the rear of the building - some 15 or more, young and old, who wanted to pray for the needs of the Assembly members and other needs as they became known. Not all prayed audibly, I for one had never prayed in public, but with some encouragement from Mrs. Stanley, I soon overcame my nervousness. The Sisters’ Prayer Meeting still continues but sadly there are few who meet in this way. Recently at Deva much emphasis in the teaching has been about the necessity and importance of prayer. These more intimate groups, the Ladies and the Men’s Prayer meetings provide opportunity to pray more specifically and effectively. Prayer is vital if we desire to see growth in the church and ourselves. I realise that not all are free to get out but do pray regularly at home, but for those who can let me encourage you, as did Mrs. Stanley with me, those many years ago. Our next Ladies Prayer Meeting will be at the home of Elsie, Why not come along and join with us? “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray....”
